Hayward Unified School District’s Transformative Social Emotional Learning (TSEL)
At HUSD, Transformative Social Emotional Learning (TSEL) is more than just teaching skills—it’s about building strong, supportive, and inclusive communities where every student can thrive. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integrated approach through which adults and students develop the fundamental skills and competencies needed to thrive in school and in life. SEL involves cultivating the routines, norms, climate and culture of our educational system in service of our individual and collective wellbeing.
TSEL helps students and adults develop essential skills such as:
-
Self-awareness – understanding emotions, values, and strengths
-
Self-management – regulating emotions, behaviors, and setting goals
-
Social awareness – showing empathy, respect, and appreciation for diversity
-
Relationship skills – building positive, healthy connections with others
-
Responsible decision-making – making thoughtful, ethical choices
Why TSEL Matters for HUSD:
-
For Students: TSEL improves academic outcomes, builds resilience, reduces stress, and strengthens peer and adult relationships. Students feel safe, valued, and supported—helping them succeed inside and outside the classroom.
-
For Staff: TSEL creates a culture of care and collaboration. Teachers are equipped with tools to support students’ well-being while fostering positive, inclusive learning environments.
-
For Families: TSEL extends beyond the classroom. Families are partners in this work, helping children practice skills at home and strengthening family connections.
By embedding Transformative SEL into every classroom and community interaction, HUSD ensures that learning is equitable, culturally responsive, and empowering for all students.
Together, we’re creating a district where every student feels seen, heard, and supported to reach their full potential.
